Mindfulness Workshop for Parents

4-Week Workshop on “Mindfulness”

Led by Manuela Mischke-Reeds, MFT (our very own SHS parent), faculty at JFK University, Campbell, CA & Sofia University, Palo Alto, CA., M.A. in Somatic Psychology from California Institute of Integral Studies.

This event is offered FREE to all SHS parents. It is optional to come to 1 or all of the workshops, although you are encouraged to attend all 4 to benefit from it. Each class has a short lecture on Mindfulness followed by a practical exercise and discussion.

 

 

Firefighter Mental Health and Trauma Awareness Class

*Description of class:*
This class is designed to give a short and concise overview of the effects of trauma for FF related to work-induced trauma and stress. The focus of the class is to equip the FF with a theoretical foundations and with concrete trauma and stress resolution techniques that can be utilized in and after the job. Understanding the effects of work related trauma and how to recognize warning symptoms and how to apply helpful techniques towards trauma resolution is critical for peak job performance and enhances life quality.
The class is a combination o short lectures, and experiential execs that include mindfulness awareness, breathing techniques and emotional mastery tools.

*Objectives: *

1. Raise mental health awareness related to work induced trauma and stress tailored specific to FF responsibilities.
2. Provide simple and effective hands on tools for stress regulation such as mindfulness and somatic awareness techniques.
3. Introduce FF to symptom recognition and how to seek help with work trauma/stress related issues.

What is Mindfulness?

This class highlights current scientific findings on Mindfulness research. We will explore how to start practicing Mindfulness in our busy daily lives.

October 21, 2014 – Frazzled, Distracted and Overwhelmed. Now What?
We explore the challenges of our mental chatter and how to establish focus and attention. This class highlights the importance of breath and body awareness in Mindfulness practice.

October 28, 2014 – Cultivating Empathy and Compassion
What makes us happy? We will look at the neuroscience findings on Compassion, Empathy and Kindness and how to bring simple gratitude practices into our mindfulness practice.

November 4, 2014 – Bringing it Home
This class focuses on how to bring Mindfulness into our family life as a healthy habit. We also look at age appropriate applications for our mindful kids.
